"DUI"
The search term DUI
is a somewhat ambiguous reference to a three letter acronym for "driving under
the influence," a crime that is typically charged as a misdemeanor but can
also be charged as a felony, as is the case with felony
DUI
and vehicular manslaughter, or reduced to one of many lesser included offenses,
such as reckless driving. In this context, the term
DUI
is often used interchangeably with the terms drunk driving and
DWI
("driving while intoxicated"), all of which typically refer to a criminal
charge for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
However,
DUI
can also refer to a separate criminal offense known as "DUI
per se" wherein a defendant is charged with operating a motor vehicle with
a blood alcohol content of .08 per cent or higher. As an acronym,
DUI
can also refer to "Diving Unlimited International," a company that has
a prominent presence on the World Wide Web, or the "D language graphical User
Interface," a somewhat esoteric open source application program. Adding to
the ambiguity is the fact that "DUI"
has a plain meaning in Chinese, and the prominent
DUI
Hua Foundation uses this word as part of its name.
