A Guide to Search Results for "Santa Monica"

The search term "Santa Monica" is a more or less unequivocal reference to the city of Santa Monica, which is located on the Santa Monica Bay at the southern foot of the Santa Monica Mountains in the county of Los Angeles, California. Santa Monica is also the name of a boulevard that runs through a number of cities in Los Angeles County, including Santa Monica. The geographic area now known as Santa Monica was originally named by the Portola expedition when they arrived there in 1769 on the feast day of Saint Monica, mother of Saint Augustine and the patron saint of married women, mothers, widows, alcoholics, and victims of abuse and adultery. The name Santa Monica was eventually applied to two Spanish land grants in present day Los Angeles County, Boca de Santa Monica and San Vicente y Santa Monica, which were sold in 1872 to developers who hoped to make Santa Monica Bay into the primary port of Los Angeles. However, Santa Monica became a resort community instead, one which has since been subsumed into the larger Los Angeles Metropolitan Area.
